Material originates in the earth. Clay, glass, metal, and horsehair emerge from land and sea before passing into the realm of the hand. Yet in Origin of Materials, presented by Soluna Fine Craft in its fourth participation in London, materiality is reconsidered not as something inherent, but as something shaped. In the artist’s act of choosing, handling, and sustaining a material through to completion, a distinct sensibility takes form. Thought settles into the surface, and time gathers within the structure.

From this framework, Korean identity does not appear as a fixed or declarative condition, but unfolds as something quietly embedded. It resides in gesture, in restraint, and in the measured way a material is approached and resolved. Shaped by lived environments and cultural memory, these sensibilities emerge through nuance, through the accumulation of time and the discipline of making. The works invite a slower mode of looking, to be encountered as traces of process, attention, and transformation.

In bringing together Soluna artists, Origin of Materials offers a space in which material, thought, and identity converge. What emerges is not a singular definition, but a field of quiet propositions, suggesting that materiality is not merely a matter of substance, but of perception, of memory, and of thought.
