born in 1971
My work conceptually marries function and aesthetics in understanding different materials which transform into one-off furniture. Trained in woodworking and furniture design in Korea’s most prominent university, no other than Hongik University, I currently practice as an art-furniture maker. After attaining my basic degrees in Korea, I went to America, more specifically to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Rochester NY. The experience was significant as I worked as a carpenter while doing my MFA degree at the Wendell Castle Collection owned by an American artist making art furniture. After returning to Korea, I did a PhD at my mother university and at the time, I wrote my thesis on “Art Furniture embodying the Three Non-being Spirits of Korean Ancient Architecture”. The subject of this thesis shows the area in which I am interested in. Over the years, I have been able to build comprehensive and extensive knowledge on wood, metal, stone in addition to other materials simultaneously as learning all the technical skills required in handling these different materials.
